Profile and Focus of the Department

Psychology at the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel looks back on a long tradition. In 1998, the "Institute of Psychology" celebrated its 100th anniversary. Since the 70s, the number of chairs has been gradually expanded to eight with currently about 40 scientific assistants.

Traditionally, the department emphasizes the unity of basic and applied research in conjunction with an empirical-experimental orientation. In basic research, the focus is currently on visual perception, emotion psychology, psychological diagnostics and social psychology. Among the application subjects are clinical psychology, legal psychology and work and organizational psychology.

Since the teaching of these application subjects should lead to a professional practice on a scientific basis, the department attaches particular importance to both a theoretical-psychological methodology, which is to enable a scientifically-based planning, implementation and evaluation of examinations and evaluations, as well as practice-oriented methods, as for example in diagnostics for making reports or i clinical psychology to enable a corresponding social competence.
